The EndoBarrier is a new technology that may be an alternative to gastric surgery for people who are dangerously obese. It’s an impermeable sleeve that can be deployed in the stomach to line the first 60 centimeters of the small intestine. The barrier is designed to remain in place for a few months and prevents the intestine from absorbing calories. In animal experiments and preliminary human trials, it reduces weight and rapidly brings type 2 diabetes under control. Weight gain (especially around the waist) is associated with type 2 diabetes.

This seems a better alternative to the gastric band, as this seems reversible and can be removed after a certain amount of time giving the stomach and eating habits a good chance of change for obese people, but how much will this procedure cost? and considering this will help diabetes type 2 surely this will save the NHS money and therefore the procedure should be free for the morbidly obese and subsidies for other over weight people. I for one would welcome such as I have been overweight for 4 years and because of a breathing problem (I cannot excercise as I would wish) so Im finding the weight very difficult to shift. I also am careful in what I eat.

Hi. My opinion about this new alternative to lose weight is that it will not help people to learn how to eat healthy, people will eat anything and as soon as they have lost weight and the endobarrier is removed, they will become obese again. Also, the small intestine is a key part of our digestive system to absorb many nutrients, not only calories. It will probably cause deficiencies of vitamins and minerals causing many other health problems to those who are obese. If the person is extremely obese and it is a life-threatening situation, the best thing is to go for the gastric surgery. Those who are extremely obese and need to lose weight, but the situation is not a life-threatening situation: learn to eat healthy!

I dont particularly agree with Andrea Bianchi, Ive always eaten healthy, and as we know we need calouries for energy, anabalisn, catablaism, metabalism, build up, break down, ENERGY ! the terribly obese need a kick start to help to lose weight as their weight is out of control. Why will ‘they’ become obese again? My weight gain was gained from lack of exsice from a spell in hospital and of course either hospital food or treats that people would bring along so Andrea think again ! And of course if you dont eat the right diet you will suffer vitamin and mineral lose with or without any surgery !!!!!!!

Linda ate “Trail Mix” last night. It contained peanuts. About five hours after eating, she became very sick with stomach cramps and vomiting.
She spent this day in bed. It appears to be peanut poison.

so this endobarrier, would I have to go all the way to Mass to get it and what would be the cost for it?

eating can be an addiction, what is difficult about it is that other than alcohol and drugs you cannot fully abstaine from it, there is lots of research regarding this, therefore it is very easy for people to say “just lose weight” or “just eat healthy” it is much more complex than that, if people take a pill to lower cholesterol and high blood pressure medical therapy for obesity is very reasonable, I have treated many non-obese type two diabetics and people with stoke and other diseases, this is NOT uncommon. Genetics do play a big role.

The verdict is in. I’m calling it. Two words that need to be separated in a rancorous divorce: fat and eat. As in, “I am so fat, I have to stop eating.” They get no visitation what.so.ever. It is THAT serious. Why is this satisfactory? As obesity increasingly becomes the norm, society has grown too accepting. Perhaps what is lacking is the same thing that helped smokers lose their butts: a healthy dose of social stigma. If only there were more shame in being fat, maybe more people would be motivated to lose weight? I dunno. It’s just a thought. In my opinion, the obese could use some blame, or responsibility, not a solution to be more of glutton. I mean, am I way off course here?

WE LEARN OUR BAD EATING HABITS IN SCHOOLS AND HOME. ALMOST EVERY FOOD WE WAT IS TO FAYTTENING. FRUITS IN STEAD OF AN APPLE OR ORANGE IN SCHOOL? FATTENING CEREALS LIKE CAPTAIN CRUNCH OR LUCKY CHARMS IN WHOLE MILK. I NEVER HAD THE GROWTH RATE OF A CALF WHO THE MILK WAS MADE FOR. SCHOOL? WHAT KINDS OF SCHITZERS RUN THIS SYSTEM? THE RICH PEOPLE LEARN HOW TO LIVE RIGHT, SAVE STOCKS AND BONDS,ETC. THE POORER COMMUNITIES MUST SUFFER THE SHAME AND DEGRIDATION OF THEIR BODIES. THEN IT IS OFTEN TOO LATE. GLUTTON? WE JUST WERE NOT TAUGHT THE RIGHT WAY TO EAT. THIS HORRIBLE LOOKING CONTRAPTION IN MY STOMACH WITH BARBS IN IT? CAN’T THEY THINK OF A HUMANE ALTERNATIVE?
