The popular children show Sesame Street will be launching a new program in Nigeria to teach kids about HIV/AIDS. The show is called “The Adventures of Kami and Big Bird” and will feature Kami, a character from the South African version of Sesame Street. Kami is HIV-positive and an AIDS orphan. The show is expected to reach about 30,000 Nigerian children.

Dr. Chang practices Family Medicine at the University of California Davis Medical Center, where his medical interests include both pediatric and geriatric care, public health, gay and lesbian health, and sleep medicine. Sesame street is still one of my favourite programmes.It s a bit shocking to know of this project but we gotta move on with the time,may be this is the best to protect the children.All the best!

That is so cool! I think it will be an effective way to reach and teach kids; I certainly remember as a kid, growing up in Nigeria, sesame street was one of a handful of kids shows that I loved to watch. Great piece, thanks for posting!

I have long believed that in addition to curing HIV/AIDS we have to teach PREVENTION and abstinance because some people will respond to avoidance messages, but it is more important to teach ways to Prevent the spread of this deadly infection. I know because my son’s Father died of Aids.After we broke up he had unprotected sex during a drinking binge and got in trouble, went to Prison and found out he was sick.It is a totally preventable disease and I find it amazing that nobody is telling people WHAT the symptoms are and how to Prevent infection!!!!
